Table Tennis?! I say YES!!

In 255 the other day we went to the squash courts and were taught how to do two moves in table tennis. Table tennis definitely is not my sport but it was a lot of fun to be honest! The thing that I remember distinctly from this lessons is how the teachers dealt with the relationship issues that were happening. Both teachers were given a relationship issue in order to deal with. Mr. Banks had to deal with a cheating issue with three of his students. I think that Mr. Banks handled the situation very well. He had one of the students leave the room after she had an outbreak during the classroom. That was not his first reprimand however, he first got closer to the group and the students acted better for just a moment. Then the outbreak happened and further steps were taken. The student causing problems was taken out of the room, talked to, and then let back into the class when she repeated the classroom rules. I think that when he made her repeat the rules, it was great!! I never had thought about doing that before but it is a great idea and I am going to use that from now on!!

The other lesson Justin taught and had to deal with his students flirting with him. Two female students made advances on him but he handled it very well.  They wanted to be on his team and demonstrate everything for hi. They were obviously flirting with him but he was very professional and he told the girls what to do. The asked them politely to go to the other end of the tennis table at some points, but he also still let them demonstrate the activity which I thought was good. One of the students ran her fingers through his hair and he told her that was inappropriate and not to do that again. I thought that he handled that well, it was definitely shocking but he did a good job handling the situation.

I just hope that I can handle situations like these as well as these two student teachers did in their table tennis lessons. Great job Eric and Justin!!

Zumba with a twist

The other day Dan taught a great Zumba lesson!!! He recorded himself doing a Zumba lesson, but I was blind for the lesson so I was unable to see the video. I was told however that it was great though.

When I first told Dan that I was blind he was shocked but he handled it very well!! Dan adapted extremely well and fast, by calling out the steps for me and describing the steps so that I could visualize what they were. I was very frustrated throughout the lesson though because I wished that I could just see what was going on but knowing that I couldn't. In all honesty I could not tell you were I was in the gymnasium for the majority of the lesson.

At the lesson we had to make a routine, and follow the ones that led their routine as well. That was extremely difficult because when I had to follow the other groups I had no idea if I was doing the dances correctly. I felt that everyone was staring at me and that I was making a fool of myself. Even though I was self conscious and frustrated throughout the lesson, I still had a great time. I also gained a better understanding of what a person that is blind has to go through on a day to day basis. Even though it was only a glimpse it still changed my perspective immensely. I just hope that if I have a student with a disablility that I will be able to do all that I can for them in order to make them feel as though they are just as comfortable as the other students in the class. Great job Dan!!!

Yoga!!!

Ms. Clark did a great job opening up for lab D! I loved her instant activity it was really creative!! It really left me with a feeling about how important it is for us to combat obesity. We wore heavy backpacks and we when we were it for walking tag. The backpacks were about an extra twenty pounds for us to carry around so for some people it was definitely difficult. I thought that her lesson was as equally as good! She had us get into pairs and then go to stations.

The stations were great. I really liked the idea of having us record ourselves at one of the stations with her iPad. It was a really clever idea! Another thing that I really liked about the lesson was that Trish made a routine that we did at the end of the lesson.

Overall I would have to say that I had a great time doing yoga in this lesson and I cannot wait until I get to do it again!!!!

Scavenger Hunt!!!

Today in 255 instead of our normal class we participated in a scavenger hunt throughout park center!!! It was so much fun I wouldn't mind doing that a more times at all. It was a great way to integrate technology into physical education. We split up into groups and we used smart phones to scan bar codes that were set up throughout the building, that lead us to other clues. There were ten places that we needed to find and each place had a letter and a clue to the next bar code. The letters that we got we had to unscramble and figure out what the letters spelt. This is a great way to get the students thinking cognitively. The final phrase was red dragons which is our school mascot which I thought was cool. The scavenger hunt was also an amazing way to get out heart rate up and to get us active. I had more than 2 thousand steps within less than an hour from doing this activity which is great!!! I am actually keeping track of my steps online with http://www.peclogit.org and it is great!! I get to see how many step I take a day seeing those numbers really will shock you!! I suggest that everyone get a pedometer and track your step count with this because it is easy to use and free!! I personally love the site and I think that you will too!!

Thank you Steve Miner for coming up with the scavenger hunt I think that it was amazing, and I would love to do it again!!! Oh and PS in case you were wondering my team won the scavenger hunt!!! Yeah Baby!!

Intraurals!!! Yeah it was a blast!!

Over the past few months I played on a basketball intramurals team and I had a ton of fun!! I used to play on the  varsity team at my previous college but I did not like that at all so I decided here I would not try out for the team but I would just do intramurals instead. It was more of a family on this team and that is how I was taught a basketball team should be. I love being able to just get out there and do something that I love to do. I have played basketball every since the 3rd grade and I am a junior in college at this point in time so to say the least I have played quite a few games! That also tells you that I have really enjoyed playing this sport.

I wanted to encourage anyone that is thinking about doing an intramural team to just do it, whether you know the sport or not!! My freshman year of college I played broomball and I had a blast!! I will never forget how much fun that I had just getting out there and doing it!!

ExerGaming!!!

LEARNING HOW TO DO SOMETHING NEW!!!
ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE???

Ithaca Schools Introduce Active Gaming iDANCE System for Physical Education - Blog - Exergame Fitness | ExerGaming | Scoop.it
Well this is something that is so interesting and fun!!!! Exergaming is what I will be using for my lab D. I am going to be doing a cardio-vascular unit with the equipment that is in the lab! I went in on Friday for class and played iDance which was a ton of fun!!! After class I stayed and learned how to set up the Kinect which was a real feat for me!! I have never been very technologically inclined so learning this is good for me! When I took 201 I remember thinking that after the first day there was no way I would be able to do any of the technology stuff but now I have a new confidence in myself and a want to learn so much more about how to integrate technology into my teaching. Setting equipment up is still something that I have to learn how to do but it is something that I am going to end up becoming very good at!!! You wait and see!!!

1K and 5K walk/run at St. Mary's

This weekend at St. Mary's was the 1K and 5K walk/ run race for the stars that I volunteered at with 4 of my classmates. It was a lot of fun! We were assigned to direct the runners the correct way as well as hand out water at the water station. We first did the 1K and that was mainly students that did that, but they had some impressive times. During that race I stood on the corner of Kinney Drugs and directed the runners to the final stretch. I tried to motivate the students to run the last bit of it, especially the ones that looked like they were running out of gas. After that we quickly went to the water station and handed out the water to the older competetors. It is amazing how many times people told us thank you for volunteering our time to help out with this, I really felt good about helping out!!! I would do it again next year I can only hope though that it isn't raining/ snowing. However I did it once I can do it again. After the race was done we were taken care of by being fed pankakes, and bacon :)

We were just trying to keep everyone safe and happy on their run on saturday and I would have to say that we succeeded!!

Volunteering at St. Mary's

On March 25 I went to St. Mary's and reffed the annual alumni basketball game. It was seriously a blast!!!  The My friend Maggie reffed along with me which made it fun as well! I think that the alumni basketball game is a great idea! Students that are in 7th through 12th grade that went to St. Mary's for elementary school come back and play against each other. There were two teams and the boys and the girls of all ages played. The best part of the tournament was seeing how much fun everyone was having. It reminded me of my old elementary school where we had an annual tournament that let the students play against their parents.  I mean this tournament was eye opening. There were students there with a wide variety of skills.  Some of the students were dunking where others were at very elementary levels of play but that was because they were just starting out in their basketball career. It was great to see everyone working together. I was shocked when a seventh grade boy sunk about 5 three pointers in one period. I really had a great time volunteering and I was very thankful that Mrs. Boyland gave me this opportunity. I told everyone that I will definitely be back next year to do it again!

Me teaching the T shape No T-Rex's

Lab C!!!
Teaching how to throw over handed by using the T shape for Tchoukball!!

For lab C I was in the group that taught Tchoukball, a game that originates from Switzerland.  This was a game that I had never heard about yet alone played. I thought that it was great! I had a lot of fun teaching my students how to throw properly. The one thing that I could have done better was watched my time better. In lab D I will be try to manage my time a lot better. I should have started my instant activity as soon as the class started, this would have been a more efficient way to start my lesson than the way that I did it. Another thing could have done was only teach one skill, the over handed throw instead of the underhanded throw as well. I should have just mentioned that we were going to work on the underhanded throw in the next class. I will have to remember this the next time I do another lesson plan. Overall though excluding my time management I think that I did a good job teaching. All of the students were excited and they all wanted to participate in the activity. I think that they had a good time and that is huge for me. Physical education is about teaching students how to improve upon their skills that they have but for me it is also about having a good time. As you can see in all the pictures everyone is smiling, and have the skill down. That makes me feel like I did well at the end of the day.

After watching my videos from my lab B and comparing it to lab C I feel as though I have grown and bettered my teaching. I think that I am more aware of what the students are doing. I think that I get better each time that I teach because honestly that is the only way that I am going to improve. In both labs I have very good vocal projection, you can always here me. I also fell as though I can command everyone in the classes attention. In this lab I demonstrated the incorrect way how to throw the ball which I was happy about because that did not happen in lab B. I also said what my signal for attention was, even though it was a little confusing, my signals worked. All of this information can be found of the following document which is my feedback that I recieved from my TA. I still have to work on my introduction so that it becomes easier for me to say my name when I first start my lesson. I need to remember that I need to just go into my instant activity the next time that I teach. Overall I think that I do a good job teaching my students a skill or task because at the end of each lesson almost if not all of my students have the skill or task that I taught learned. Overall I just love to teach though, and I want to continue to learn better ways how to do that so that I can improve, and help my students to the best of my ability.

Above is my video of me teaching how to throw using the T shape!!! Below is a movie that I made from my lesson!! I hope that you all enjoy!!!

Tchoukball!!! Here I come

In class on Monday I learned that I am going to be teaching Tchoukball. It is something that I had never heard of before but I am excited to learn about it. I am going to be teaching Kindergarteners how to throw the ball and then my other group members are going to be teaching the class how to play the game to older students. I am going to be teaching my students how to use the T shape to throw. It is a great way to teach young children in the beginning how to improve their overhand throw.

Finally it was my turn to teach!!! The wounded duck here we go!

Lesson Plan for Lab B

Transposition

Checklist

Teaching lab B was a lot of fun! It was definitely a real classroom experience. In my lesson I had to teach how to do the jump rope skill, the wounded duck. My cues I thought were pretty simple but they were very effective. Many of the students needed to work on the skill but some of them got it right off. In my lesson I really liked how I demonstrated how to do the skill without a jump rope because I feel like that helps the students becasue it takes one element out of the skill when they are first learning how to do the wounded duck. The students can work on the footwork and then they can incorporate the jump rope which I think is the best way to go about it. I also really liked my cues!!

Overall I had a great time teaching this lesson and I cannot wait to teach my next lesson!!!

Day 9 of 255

Today in class we worked on our cues that we will be using for our lessons on Friday! I am excited to teach the wounded duck jump rope move. I am going to say toes in toes out as my cue. For a visual though I am going to have a picture of a duck foot as well as a penguins foot on my poster because I feel that it will allow for my students to really remember what the cues are going to be. The more visual the cues the stronger memory a student will have to the task that they are given. Most students are visual learners so thinking of different ways to display something is very important.

Day 8 of 255

In class on Friday we continued with the jump ropes and we worked on the skill that we are going to be teaching the class for lab B in the upcoming days. My move that I am teaching is called the wounded duck. I am excited to teach this skill because I really like the move and I feel as though I will be able to teach the whole class how to do it! The students are going to have to move their feet in and out in order to do the wounded duck. A few cues are feet in feet out. I feel as though I will be able to teach everyone how to do this move and I cannot wait to do this!!!

Day 7 of 255

In class we worked with jump ropes. We worked in groups of three to make a routine to go along with the music that was playing. We had done a routine the class before that did not go too well but this one was a lot better. We used some of the moves that we saw in the video the day before in class. In the video we learned that jump roping can be really cool and a great way to work on your cardiovascular endurance. I was in a group with Max and Stephanie and we rocked it!! I think that we had an amazing routine that no one is going to be able to beat!

We are getting ready for lab B and brushing up on our jump roping skills and I cannot wait!!

Day 6 of 255

Today in class we were surprised with jump ropes. Jump ropes are great when working on cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance. While jump roping you also work on your flexibility and muscular strength.  Jump ropes are relatively inexpensive and they are easily stored as well so they are a great tool to use to work on quite a few areas of physical health. We attempted today to do a routine with the jump ropes but it was not very successful.  We did fine when we were practicing in the corner but when it came down to being recorded it was another story. Even though our performance was not grad my group still tried to get out there and jump rope. It was fun and frustrating at the same time.  You are not always going to be successful at what you do but as long as you work at it you will get better at any given task. That is what I am going to leave with that lesson, along with quite a good workout. I wonder what is in store for me in my next class!

Day 5 of 255

Today in lab we were given the opportunity to reteach the first lesson that we taught on the first day of class to our peers. I think that I did very well on my lesson. I changed some things up this time though and most were for the better! This time I introduced myself which is something that I had not done before but that is very important to do. Another thing that I really liked that I did was make a safety statement because they are extremely important, because we want all of our students to be safe. Another thing that I did was give a correct demonstration of the skill that I was working on. I was loud when I was instructing the class. I am glad that I have a naturally loud voice because it is only going to help me in the long run.  I asked if everyone knew what their tasks were and if anyone had any questions in the lesson. This is extremely important because if my students have any questions it is my job to answer them. I also gave a lead in to the next lesson that I will be teaching and I thought that was really good, because it gives the students something to look forward to.

The things that I can improve upon for next time is not jumping into the lesson as a student but always remaining the teacher, because I will be able to see more this way. Which in turn will make it easier for me to assess my students in the future.  The other thing that I should have done differently was no have rushed at the end because my time was running out. I have remember that that is my class and I am in charge of it at all times.  These are somethings that I hope to improve upon next time.  I think that peer teaching is great because it really gives you great feedback and it really does help you to improve. Honestly though the best way that I am going to improve is by simply getting out there and teaching more often, which by the way I cannot wait to do!!

Day 4 of 255

Today in class we learned the importance of projecting our voices. This is an extremely important skill to have! I went to St. Mary's yesterday and it is something that you need to know how to do. I am naturally a loud person but I need to learn how to project even better because I lost my voice and it isn't the first time that has happened. In class we also learned the importance of an instant activity and a safety tip. An instant activity will get students ready to move. It is also something good to do before you stretch so that you can get warm because it is never good to stretch cold. After the instant activity which was a form of freeze tag we did some yoga. This gave us a really good stretch and it got all of us loose and ready for the rest of class. After we did the yoga we moved onto getting into small groups and talking about what would improve the lesson that we taught the first day of class. During the first day of class I taught a lesson on how to properly make a chest pass and a bounce pass. A few things that I am going to do differently when I teach the lesson next time is make a safety statement, give boundaries and incorporate a hook.  All of these things will help me make my lesson even better! I can always grow and learn!! I mean that is what teaching is about!!!

Day 3 of 255

Yesterday was a fun and intense day in class.  Professor Yang started of the class with a story about the Chinese New Year which 2012 is the year of the dragon as well as firecrackers.  He told us that we would be like firecrackers and be intense for a few seconds and then fade away.  This was great because it not only got us active but it also taught us about the Chinese New Year.  You can incorporate so much with physical education.  He also taught us how to say Chinese New Year in Chinese and how to say one, two and three in many languages as well.  We then partnered up with a classmate and we did 20 seconds of intense activity and 10 seconds of resting and catching our breaths and we did this for a total of 4 minutes. The intense workout that we did was with throwing the Frisbee's and it was a lot of fun. Then we did a little bit of yoga and that is a great stretch I will tell you! Then Professor Yang then told us that we were going to group up and defend our goals and try to score on the others goals. It definitely got us sweating and working hard with little or no equipment. Being a physical education teacher you are going to have to adapt most things do to your environment or your equipment. It all comes down to thinking on your feet and trying to incorporate many different things into your lesson in order to teach the best that you can to your students.
Toward the end of the class we went down to the classroom and we were given the syllabus for EDU 255 and it seemed reasonable. Nothing really surprised me because I had had Professor Yang for PED 201 so I knew what to expect. I could see though that some of my classmates were shocked by all that we were going to have to do but I wasn't.  I am glad that I will have my 10 hours outside of the class though by being a TA for Professor Yang.  I am really glad that I get to do it at St. Mary's because that is the place where I grew and continue to grow as being a physical educator.  The above pictures are when I volunteered at St. Mary's last semester when they had their holiday bash. I helped run a car racing game, and I helped also tear down all the games. I just love giving back to the school that has helped me so much. This semester I went back actually and helped one of my friends coach the 4th and 5th grade boys for a practice. It was a blast!! I can't wait to see what upcoming opportunities I will have in the future!!

Yoga and Frisbee Today

Today I went to class and we were given Frisbee's to throw around. We first started out by passing normally to a partner, and then we tried to figure out ways to pass the Frisbee that was different. While doing this I learned how to flick a Frisbee. After the worked on passing we me and three other classmates went and we ran around the gymnasium and passed the Frisbee's and we tried to see how many times we could pass the Frisbee from one side of the court to the other. Making a complete pass is harder than it looks when you are running around and trying to get by a defender. It was a great workout though.

After we worked with the Frisbee's we then all gathered around and we worked on some yoga. You do not need anything at all to do yoga and yet it is an amazing workout, it gives you such an amazing stretch.

The last thing that we did was the name game. We got into a circle and we had to remember everyone's name and the activity that they taught during the first class. It amazed me how well I did with everyone's name. Overall the class was very interesting and we learned that we don't need a lot of things to get someone in shape, you just need to get out there and do something!!

The First Day of Being a TA at St. Mary's!!

So I had a blast being a TA yesterday!! It was so nice to be back at St. Mary's!! When I walked in I saw that my thank you poster was still hanging on the gymnasium door and it put a smile on my face. When I walked into the gymnasium and sat on the bleachers with Stephanie we looked at the new students coming in and we saw that they were terrified. It was funny because I know that was me at the beginning of the last semester. I love the fact that I have grown so much from taking 201 the semester before. I also love that I can now help the upcoming class grow and be a part in their development.
